Crooked Cranes released their debut EP, ‘This is Only a Test’ on May 9, 2025 which maintains the original raw and genuine character from its production. The album emerged from a basement hangout with friends and smoke and reflects the band’s easygoing nature that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The band originates from Fuquay Varina, North Carolina, and features long-time friends Josh Faw, Dylan Hornaday, and Andrew Bateman along with Josh’s younger brother who plays bass. The band takes cues from alt-rock icons Dinosaur Jr. and Built to Spill to create music that mixes fuzzy guitar sounds with weird tales and chill performances that sound both classic and brand new.

The EP begins with “GF” which presents a gritty rock anthem about a man dealing with his girlfriend sleeping with his father while mixing dark humor and rage with a memorable riff. “Mehico” explores an extraordinary real-life encounter with a cartel leader while on a journey through Mexico. The looseness combined with loudness and absurdity contribute to what makes the music endearing. The music becomes moody with “Dolfin” about an enigmatic girl who refuses to reveal her name before transitioning smoothly into the atmospheric “Interstate Song” which is ideal for late-night drives or relaxation at home.

“Met a Gurl” brings renewed energy while adding heartbreak to divorce themes without becoming too heavy. The final track “NeWay” completes the stoner rock journey encouraging listeners to experience the EP through music-induced escapism. ‘This is Only a Test’ does not aim to achieve a polished or profound sound. The record demonstrates that organic musical outcomes from spontaneous recording sessions often produce the most genuine results.
