James Houlahan’s On a Wing feels like a record built on endurance. Not the loud, triumphant kind—but the quieter version, where you just keep going because stopping isn’t an option. There’s a grounded honesty running through it that makes the album feel lived-in rather than carefully constructed.

James Houlahan – On a Wing

The songwriting doesn’t chase big moments. Instead, tracks like These Changes and All Night unfold in a way that feels almost conversational. Houlahan isn’t trying to impress with complexity—he’s focused on clarity. That simplicity gives the lyrics more room to land, especially when they touch on uncertainty, change, and holding onto something steady. The rhythm section plays a crucial role in shaping that feel. Danny Frankel and Greg Cohen bring a natural flow that keeps everything anchored. Their playing is subtle but effective, giving the songs a sense of movement without pushing them too far in any direction. It feels like they’re holding the centre while everything else shifts around them.

There’s also a warmth in the instrumentation that adds depth without overwhelming the core of the record. John Kruth’s contributions bring in textures that feel organic and slightly unexpected, but they’re used with restraint. Nothing feels added for the sake of it—every sound has a place. What gives On a Wing its character is how it approaches its themes. It doesn’t try to offer answers or conclusions. Instead, it sits in the middle of things—acknowledging the mess, the uncertainty, and the need to keep moving anyway. Songs like That Bird and I and I Believe In You highlight music itself as a way of processing all of that, rather than escaping from it. The recurring imagery of flight works as a quiet thread throughout the album. It suggests movement, but not necessarily escape—more like finding a way to stay afloat. On a Wing doesn’t aim for grandeur. It’s steady, reflective, and rooted in real experience, offering something that feels genuine without trying to force its impact.
